Employee Newsletter Design
The most you need to know about employee newsletter design is to, well, not get hung up and panicky about employee newsletter design.

By far, the most important aspect of your newsletter will be newsletter content. Yes, design is important in some measure, because you certainly don't want people laughing at it while they try to read it. (Just kidding, there, but go for simplicity.)

Firstly, if you are focused on employee newsletter design, it means that you are probably doing your own newsletter and that means, most likely, that you aren't using fancy software products like Adobe, Quark, or InDesign. Instead, you are probably interested in MS Word or MS Publisher, and in fact, I highly recommend one of these two software programs for the "average Joe or Jillian" because they are extremely simply and won't gobble up your time by forcing you to flip through tutorials and manuals.

If you want to short-cut this process, collect your junk mail, or go to the grocery store or dentist office and breeze through magazines and whatnot to find pieces of designs or even whole newsletter layouts that you can mimic for your own newsletter. No, I didn't say violate a copyright of the publisher, but you can still see if two columns look good or three, the size of type, the largeness of the nameplate, and the spacing around the borders, color, etc.

You can see how many long columns there are and short columns, and whether, and how they number pages, and something very important -- how plain newsletters can really look good. Some of the most effective layouts use very basic employee newsletter design formats.

That's right, plainness is what you want. Don't get all fancy with your fonts and your colors. Stick to simplicity--like two fonts styles, bold and non-bold, and you will increase readership as a result of your employee newsletter design.

Don't over look MS Word resources, not just in your computer, but online. MS Word gives you access to Microsoft Office resources and tons of employee newsletter templates and other related support resources. Don't reinvent the wheel. I can't say that enough.

Online, you can buy very sophisticated MS Publisher templates, and of course, these resources take care of the employee newsletter design problem altogether. Sometimes however, they are too hard to work with.

With employee newsletter design, make your pictures fairly large. Make fonts 12 points. 11 is okay too.

Let me say something about images after that last example --- make them big. Don't shrink your images down to the size of nickel. Keep your images about the size of a silver dollar in your newsletter content sections.

Keep a lot of white space around things. Tight, cluttered newsletter copy  is a big turn off for people. Let your employee newsletter design breath. More "white space" is better than less.

ABOUT FRONTLINE EMPLOYEE!

“Frontline Employee” has been a huge hit – and has opened more doors with the HR people I’m developing relationships with (all over the state) than you know. Drive on and keep up the great work! Heck yes! Of course you can use my “testimonial” and my name. In fact, I’d be very glad if you did. Yes, yes, yes!

"We have found the EAP Frontline Employee which we renamed, "Reap the Benefits" to be the greatest way to keep our Employee Assistance Program visible to our employees over the years. They look forward to receiving it and will contact us if we are late sending out to them. The articles wonderfully address timely issues in the workplace.

"Aloha, Dan – I sent out the February Frontline Employee yesterday and got a call today thanking me for the excellent articles. She wanted to know more information on one of the stories – the Pennsylvania weight loss study – and I was able to Google the information and send her the links, but she was very thankful for the information!! Thanks for helping us look good once again!"

Dan has conscientiously developed software programs designed to assist EAP’s with their clients. We have found that his programs which we use for our website trainings are of superior quality featuring color graphics, and relevant information. His programs are user friendly and address all of our training needs.

Dan makes himself available and has skillfully assisted me when implementing his programs. I enjoy working with Dan and look forward to adding additional programs to our training website.
